Course Description: Learn how to create patterns on indigo-dyed fabric with textile designer and natural dyer Nadene Mairesse of Idyllwilde. You’ll learn about the origins and many applications of indigo dye as you mix your own organic indigo dye starter and vat. You will try out various “pattern resist” techniques including folding, clamping, and stenciling with clay resist paste to create patterns on your indigo-dyed cotton fabric. Create your own stencil, or use a pre-cut stencil that will be provided. You’ll leave the workshop with your dyed cotton fabrics, your stencil, and loads of knowledge to set up your own organic indigo vat at home.

In this two-day workshop, students will learn how to create patterns on indigo-dyed fabric. Each student will make an organic indigo dye starter and dye vat. They will learn various “pattern resist” techniques including folding, clamping, and stenciling with clay resist paste to create patterns on their indigo-dyed cotton fabric. Students will be given the opportunity to create their own stencil, or use a pre-cut stencil that will be provided.

Students will leave the workshop with their dyed fabrics, their stencil and their indigo vat (if they can transport it home- preferably in a pick up truck with bungee cords).

Instructor Bio:

Nadene Mairesse is a Florence, Alabama-based designer and maker whose creative work is centered on observation and response to nature, landscape, and the built environment. Slowing down, observing, and responding to her environs informs the intention and making process of her work, and fosters a meaningful connection to her surroundings. Incorporating plant-based dyes, natural fiber textiles and handcraft, Nadene’s design studio, Idyllwilde, creates limited edition collections of hand-dyed garments and home provisions. In addition to producing the Idyllwilde collection Nadene has been an educator in natural dye practices since 2016.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Nadene’s family moved to England when she was in elementary school; sewing, knitting, mending, and darning were incorporated into daily life, while summers were spent back in California immersed in fine arts programs at the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts. These childhood experiences form the foundation for Nadene’s interests in both fine art and handcraft.

Nadene’s formal education includes a BA in French Literature, UCLA, Los Angeles CA and B.Arch. and B.Int.Arch. Auburn University, Auburn, AL. Her professional work includes 15 years as a clothing designer in Los Angeles, CA, and 3 years of architectural design and community development on the Mississippi Gulf Coast at the Gulf Coast Community Design Studio, a research arm of Mississippi State University.
